The Restoration of ME

 Arrrrrrrh!!!
Back to Full Blog

I spent my first day at work in Bed (or at least 1/2 of it, that is) !!! I got the flu!!! It's a joke, right? I look for a job for 16 months, finally get one and on my first day I get sick. I went in long enough to attend the staff meeting and set up my voice and e-mail then I went home and went to bed. I figured it was better to leave than let my new boss see me throw up...lol.

She's so awesome, there were flowers on my desk when I went in welcoming me to the office. And you know I felt terrible about leaving but it was obvious that I needed to be home in bed...I couldn't even focus. Yet, the last thing I wanted to do is give a bad impression on the first day by leaving early!!! Arrrrrrh!!!

And I know she understood but still...

I'm feeling better so hopefully tomorrow I'll just be weak but at least able to sit up and have a conversation without wanting to put my head down on my desk.

So, if you guys have any funny work stories about stuff like this I'd love to hear them cause I'm kinda bummed about the whole day.

ME

Just a quick - Me too! - Im sick also with the flu - just checking in to see how you did - Sorry that your sick - take some Thero-flu - it has helped me so much today - takes away the aches and pains and allows you to rest - that with Vic's Nyquil tonite and you sleep like a baby - Good luck and I'll say a pray for you and you say one for me and we should both get better.

You too Lucy...I'm so sorry you're sick. It's awful, isn't it? I can deal with colds but the flu just stops you in your tracks. You'll be in my prayers for healing.

DANG, Mary Elizabeth! Sounds like a page out of my life! The worst one I have is having parent-teacher conferences that I HAD to be there for and I had laryngitis! I could barely get a whisper out! I ended up communicating by writing. THEN, the first day of school after that, I was home. I am sure those parents did not appreciate me sneezing and coughing all over them but the principal said either I be there or call all the parents and cancel...and since I couldn't talk....

Certainly hope you get through it! At least there's only 3 more days. sort of a 'bright' side!

I know Ron, between Lucy and I and our flus. I'm sure after I left the office they sprayed my office down (at least I hope so for their own protection). Hope you're doing well this evening my friend.

Hey Heather, being sick but having stuff that you have to do really does present some issues. And a lot of times you have to show up sick and spread a lot of germs to a lot of people. But I hope that this note finds you healthy my friend. Happy New Year!!!

Hey, don't feel bad - - here's a "first few days of work" story guaranteed to put it in perspective for ya:

I had just hired a new on-call employee for my jail screening team at a juvenile justice agency, and I was psyched - - the new hire was a guy and a Native American, bringing an entirely new and welcome perspective to my largely Anglo and female team. Unfortunately, New Hire Guy decided to celebrate by getting really, really drunk and then beating his girlfriend - - the Sheriff's Office was contacted, he was arrested and jailed, and I had to fire him immediately due to the nature of the alleged offense and the contact with law enforcement that would compromise his ability to do his job.

The moral of the story is: Getting the flu and expelling fluids from all regions of your body is okey dokey with employers. Domestic violence ain't.

Hope you're feeling better and able to enjoy your work - - show 'em what ya got!

O My Goodness MaryE!! That SO sucks!! I hope you're feeling better soon. I've only had the flu once and I hope I never have it again. It is the WORST feeling!
On my first day at my job, the bus I was riding got into an accident and it made me late for work. That is the absolute worst impression to make. I of course naively told the truth and of course my boss gave me the "yeah sure" look. And believe it or not it took years for me to shake that "rep" for being a late arriver no matter how reliable I was after that, that guy always thought the worst of me. Thank God for civil service or I woulda been outta there for sure.
Take care of yourself and remember... starve a cold feed a fever... I think.... or is it feed a cold and starve a fever...

Dearest Mary Elizabeth,

When I read that one of the catagories was "YOU'VE COME ALONG WAY BABY" I instantly thought of YOU...come on, seriously! THAT WAS A NO BRAINER!!!

You open up the book of LONG WAY BABIES and there's YOUR PHOTO!!! Jeesh...don't have to be a rocket surgeon or a brain scientist to figger it out!!!

Happy New Year and don't let the bug get you down...look at the whole picture, the long term. It was a rocky start but by GOD, a start!
But I will tell you this...I have not had a cold since knowing my fiance (a coincidence?) NO, ever since knowing him, he has made me take one of those AIRBORNE or WALBORNE just about every day. One a day has kept the kukamunga kruds AWAY!!!! And I used to get sick with the changing of the wind. Just a thought...what could it hurt...take one each morning (they don't taste THAT bad) and think of it as keeping your defense shields UP. And of course get rest and exercise and eat well yaddi yaddi...

Congratulations and WAY TO GO MAH SISTAH'FRIEND!!!!! You most certainly deserved it!

My only question....whatta' gonna' do for a follow up act???

Namaste, -pr-

Val, wow what a story about the new team that you'd hired. Yeah, I can see the difference in situations and I know it's important to put these things into perspective. But thank goodness I got better quick (i.e. I didn't throw up on my new boss) and finished off the week strong. Have a great weekend.

Hey Pilar, thank you so much for sharing your story with me. So you got on the wrong bus, huh? I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one with a "bad first day of work" story. And I hear you on thanking God for public service positions. I had one while the cubs were babies and it made a difference between me keeping my job and being fired...lol. Anyway, I hope that you are well today and having a great weekend.

Hey Sherry, thanks for stopping by and please don't apologize cause then I'll have to do the same to a lot of people, including you. I have so little time these days. But knowing how precious time is makes your visits even more special. Thank you for taking time to catch up with me. Good luck with everything Sherry. I wish you all the happiness in the world...you deserve it!!!

Hey PR, I'm feeling lots better...thanks!!! I appreciate all of your sweet encouraging words. But you're right even though my start was rocky at least it was a start!!! As to my follow-up, well I'm working a a few things like moving out of my ex-husband's house to owning my own home...taking my credit from the basement to the ceiling...trading in my beat up old truck for a Mercedes. And that's just a sampling of the things I want to accomplish in 2007...lol.

I might have come a long way but I still got a long way yet to go!!! Wish me luck!!!
